Namibia : What to Know

 

Climate:

elephantNamibia is situated over the tropic of Capricorn and enjoy a desert climate. Days can be warm, even hot, and nights mild or cold. So you must take along warm and light clothes.  
There are 3 seasons in Namibia:
The dry and hot season, from October to December, days are hot (30 to 40 degrees) and nights changeable (10 to 25 degrees)
Rainy season, from December to April, where mornings are sunny and hot, and rain arrives in the afternoon, cooling down the atmosphere. Nights can be cool or hot. 
Cold and dry season, from June to September, days are nice (25-30 degrees) and nights are cold (it is not seldom that temperature goes below zero degree).

 

Health:

With a dry climate from may to October, no usual African disease occurs in Namibia. there is no specific precaution to take.
Regarding malaria risks, they are low in the dry season (may to October). But from the beginning of the rainy season, it is advisable to take a prophylaxis. Anyway, the best prevention is to cover arms and legs as the sun set, and use repellent.

Transport : Get to Namibia

Formality:

You don't need any visa to get to Namibia, and your passport must be valid at least 6 month after your departing date. 

Money

The currency in Namibia is Namibian dollar (N$). Exchange rate on the 23rd  of August 2004 is about 8 N$ for 1€, and 7N$ for 1US$. South African rand (ZAR) is also used in Namibia, with the same value  1 ZAR = 1 N$. There is no problem to exchange euros, so it's not necessary to first exchange them is US$. Commissions on travellers cheque are high, so it is advisable to take along cash or withdraw with your credit card. .
You can use everywhere in Namibia Namibian dollars as well as south African rands. 
VISA credit cards are welcome in every banks and in most of the lodges.
